Racism has been an extremely relevant issue
throughout time. The equality between people of different cultures, skin colors
and races has been discussed and argued for generations and is still being
fought today. This makes this issue relevant to people throughout the world,
with a particular focus on people from countries that have experienced racism
to minority groups, such as Australia and the United States of America. This
equal treatment of all people has become especially prevalent in the mid to
late 20th Century and has touched the lives of millions of individuals
and families. The White Australia Policy was an Australian approach to keep
Australia predominately Caucasian, but was removed in the latter part of the 20th
Century, bringing about equal opportunities and a greater diversity to
Australia. This approach has its benefits and faults and can interest people as
it provides an insight into the ‘real’ Australia, and the Australian way of
life. The main focus on this paper will be identifying the differences between
racism during the White Australia Policy period compared with that of the time
since it has been demolished, including today. This will determine if Australia
has truly become more racist since the removal of the White Australia Policy.
The White Australia Policy was a major policy that affected
millions of people around the world, especially those trying to enter
Australia. The article “The White Australia
Policy in Retrospect Racism or Realism?” by Andrew Fraser provides a detailed
and informative account on the affects the White Australia Policy has had on
people and Australia as a whole. An interview with a member of the white
Australian community, who lived through the time period, has demonstrated that
there have been differing results from the removal of the White Australia Policy
and racism within Australia. There is further research that needs to be
continued but it has been providing an interesting account of past events and varied
perspectives into the event.
This topic may encumber
multiple challenges that need to be addressed throughout its writing. Having
such a large effect on such a vast variety of people and in many people’s
lives, staying focused on the question and not going off in tangents will be
crucial in writing a successful paper. Finding credible sources may also be
difficult as many sources are very opinion based and have large amounts of
biased behind them. Other resources are strictly informational and do not
provide relevant answers to the question I am researching.
