Environmental contamination from electronic waste recycling at Guiyu, southeast China By Anna Leung, Zong Wei Cai, Ming Hung Wong.
In this article the scientists are showing the findings of the research they did in Guiyu, China. they took soil samples from various sections of the city. Guiyu is the city that revives a lot of the old electronics from around the world. the authors are making the argument that the more powerful countries send their old electronic waste(EW) to developing countries that do not have the correct means to process them so they have minimal effect on the environment and the surrounding people.
The authors make the point that the United States has the means to recycle its own EW but because it is cheap they send it to developing nations instead. in these nations the workers use primitive methods like wood fires and acid baths to remove the recyclable materials. I thought that this article made good points in the argument but at times when the authors described the harmful chemical and adverse health effects I had to use Google to understand them. It is easy to tell that this article was intended for a different audience that could understand the large scientific words better than I could. But overall this article covers one of the major topic points that i hope to cover in the final paper.
