Windschuttle, Keith. "Why
Australia is not a racist country." Quadrant Mar. 2006: 28+. Academic
OneFile. Web. 14 Oct. 2012.
This article discusses the false
impression of racism behind the White Australia Policy. The author, Keith
Windschuttle, displays an intriguing perspective to the common view held by
many Australians in that the White Australia policy was not that developed on racism,
but instead was a misconception developed over the past thirty years. The
Article, "Why Australia is not a racist country," is a contrast
between two expert’s opinions on racism in relation to the White Australia
Policy. Windschuttle attempts to derail the second expert’s opinion through
contrasting with his own thoughts and research.
This article is an in depth look at
the White Australian Policy from two differing perspectives. One such perspective
is Windschuttle and the other, Jeremy Sammut, another expert in the field of
political and social history. This article provides an entertaining reaction to
the audience as both opinions are displayed and debated. The article also
displays views that aren’t as heavily looked at by other experts. This
increases the interest of the read and allows for the article to achieve the
greatest success it can.
Edwards, Lindy. "Behind the
Racism of White Australia Lay a Grand Vision." The Age. N.p., n.d.
Web. 14 Oct. 2012. <http://www.theage.com.au/opinion/behind-the-racism-of-white-australia-lay-a-grand-vision-20090621-cshw.html>.
The article “Behind the Racism of White Australia Lay a
Grand Vision”, by Lindy Edwards is brief analysis of the White Australia Policy
to the Australian general public. It lays out the foundations of why the policy
was initially established and the effects it had on Australia, in multiple
differing aspects. Edwards takes the position that the policy was that of a
common view of many countries in regards to view on a hierarchy of races in the
19th Century. It was also done to strengthen Australia financially
over time and allow Australia to build a greater society. In relation to
reducing the quantity of non-white foreigners, she states “White Australia can
be interpreted as a stand against slavery and indentured labor”.
My reaction to this article is that the majority of the
text is a great account of the purpose of the White Australia policy and the
effects of what happened had on Australia. I do believe, as it was an article,
some points were over simplified to allow the audience to understand which
decreases the full credibility and sways the argument slightly in favor of the
government, however does discuss the failures of the government. The article is
a good read and interesting. It provides counterarguments and overall demonstrates
an interesting view on the issue.
